I have to admin though that I still find my K20D and my beloved LX much “sexier” to use than any Nikon I’ve tried and I really prefer the look of the jpegs that the K20D or the K10D produce compared to the D90, but of course I just started using the D90.The Pentax K-3 Mark III DSLR camera won the “ BEST APS-C CAMERA EXPERT” at the 2021 TIPA Photo Imaging Awards:

While the AF on the D90 does not get me 100% of shots that I go after, it gets enough to keep me (and my daughter 20 years from now, I hope happy. I did shoot many games using manual focus but got a bit tired of that approach. I admit that I am not a very experienced sports photographer and there are likely a few things I could have tried to improve the number of in-focus shots. A large percentage of time I was unable to lock focus and take a shot at all. The typical issue I had with my K20D (latest firmware) was that almost regardless of the direction of motion, by the time the camera locked focus on the player, the moment had usually passed. I wasn't quite as impressed with the performance of the D700 using screw drive lenses like the 85 1.8. The only recent generation Nikon I've used much is the D700, which when coupled to the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 AF-S lenses is a very responsive and accurate combination. The low light performance of the K-x is also stunningly good. I find that the autofocus on the new K-x is at least as responsive as the K20D or the K7, as long as you can live without the focus confirmation LED indicators.

Using other Pentax lenses like the DA*200 and DA*50-135 I find that the SDM is slow finding first focus, but tracks moving subjects quite well. I have good luck tracking show jumping horses, birds in flight and short-track speed skaters. Autofocus performance with the FA-50, DA-70, FA*-300 is responsive and very accurate. I find that with the K20D it depends so much on which lens you have on your camera. The K20D had a better keeper rate than the K-7 as well as marginally better image quality. Hard to quantify, but my K20D with updated firmware outperformed a K-7 that I bought and returned after using them head to head photographing birds in flight last summer. Although undocumented, I really think there was an improvement in AF-C performance with the firmware update that also improved the Shake Reduction.

I'm curious if you are seeing much difference in practice in terms of in-focus shots comparing the K20D with the D90.Īs an aside, make sure you are using the latest firmware for the K20D.
